"Age is just a number, and "retirement" is a state of mind. Some are already mentally or psychologically "retired" while still physically working and earning a salary. Others continue to pursue their passion way after their gainful engagements" -.Dato' Jaffar Indot, President /CEO MACD

1. Why is it important to unite corporate directors and have an umbrella body for them? Tan, Selangor
There are numerous non-government organisations and directors education/training organisations offering various membership benefits and programmes to corporate directors in Malaysia. Some are regulatory-driven, others are more market-driven but they invariably contribute to equipping directors for their roles on the board. Directors and market players, however, need more than just educational input; they need a common platform to have a voice in the development of the Malaysian capital market, in which they are the direct stakeholders.

The Malaysian Alliance of Corporate Directors (MACD), a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee, offers that common platform (an umbrella body) to positively engage other stakeholders, including the regulators, with a common voice that resonate a positive development of the capital market.

2. What keeps you going as an active participant on boards and other organisations despite the fact that you're nearing 80? No retirement plans on the horizon? Yeoh Cheow Tim, Subang Jaya
I am not 80 yet still three more years to go! But then again, age is just a number, and "retirement" is a state of mind. Some are already mentally or psychologically "retired" while still physically working and earning a salary. Others continue to pursue their passion way after their gainful engagements.

competencies

What is competency? Simply skills, attitude and knowledge of a person.

Thus a competent person is the one who has all the three aspects, developed over time:
  • his/her skill set - BEHAVIOURAL aspect;
  • his/her mindset - ATTITUDE aspects; and
  • his/her appropriate knowledge -KNOW-HOW aspect.

Generally, there are three broad (organizational) categories of competency, namely:

1. CORE Competency - applicable to every employee. Normally bonded in Shared Values of an organization.
Examples: integrity, teamwork, respect...

2. LEADERSHIP Competency - applicable to 'position' (that lead others). The label of competency is structured according to the strategic goal of an organization.
Example: Strategic thinking capability, coaching, mentoring, facilitating...

3. TECHNICAL Competency - applicable to job specific in nature. Directly related to functional objectives.
Example: Customer service, legal, engineering, finance...

A high performance organization strategically built those competencies in their Performance Management System (PMS).

human capital

Human Capital is now becoming a commonly used commodity. To a certain extend interchangeably used as human resource!...

What is 'human capital'?

While there are diverse definitions, it is generally agreed that human capital bears the following characteristics:
  • the embodiment of PRODUCTIVE CAPACITY within people;
  • the SUM of people's skills, knowledge, attributes, motivations and fortitude;
  • can be GIVEN or RENTED to others - but on a temporary basis, as ownership is non-transferable!
and
  • unlike all other factors of production, human capital is the only that CANNOT BE OWNED!
...AND THIS NEEDS FOR REALITY CHECK for employers
and offers HR Professionals one of its biggest challenges

managing talent

Managing talent involves ATTRACTING, DEVELOPING and RETAINING individuals with high potential across all levels of the organization.

Talent is the single most important force creating strategic value for organizations.
The meaningful assets of an organization are KNOWLEDGE.
And the only meaningful form of capital is INTELLECTUAL CAPITAL.

A company remains competitive only if it acquires, develops and uses knowledge FASTER than the COMPETITION.

Hence the key factor in determining the success of an organization is its ability to use HUMAN TALENT! The ability to discover the best talent is by develop it, motivate it, energize it and retain it...

cascading vision

Leaders need to pay significant attention to and get broad involvement in three stages of the vision creation and dissemination process.

First, they need involvement in the creation of the vision and buy-in from the senior levels.

Second, when cascading the vision down the organization, they need to allow for real discussion and input.

Third, leaders need to track effectively and assess the impact of the vision implementation.

team...

Not finance. Not strategy. Not technology. It is TEAMWORK that remains the ultimate competitive advantage - because it is so powerful and so rare.

The power of teamwork when...
"if you could get all the people in an organization rowing in the same direction, you could dominate any industry, in any market, against any competition, any time" [Lencioni, 2002]

Team can be expressed in a single word, SYNERGY. Synergy means that the sum of the whole is greater than its individual parts.

TEAM* can simply expressed as follows:

T = Trusting Relationship,
E = Established Purpose, Values and Goals,
A = Active Participation by All the Members of the Group, and
M = Mutual Accountability.

shared visioning

Vision on a personal scale translates into 'path finding' in an organizational setting.

Basically, an organization has four needs:

1. Survival - financial health;

2. Growth and Development - economic growth, consumer growth, innovation of new products and services, increasing professional and institutional competency;

3. Relationship - strong synergy, strong external networks and partnering, teamwork, trust, caring, valuing differences;

4. Integrity and Contribution - serving and lifting all stakeholders, making a difference in the world!

Helping people clearly understand and get committed to significant goals requires you to involve them in decision making. Together you determine the destination of the organization - Vision and Mission.

Then everybody in the organization will have ownership in the path that leads to the destination - the shared visioning.
