There are various definitions of mentoring and coaching. The simple way to describe /and to differentiate them as follows:
Mentoring is 'off-line' help by one person to another in making significant transitions in knowledge, work or thinking. The mentor helps the mentee step 'outside the box' of his or her job and personal circumstances, so that they can look in at it together. Ongoing relationship that can last for a long period of time.
It is like standing in front of the mirror with someone else, who can help you see things about you that have become too familiar for you to notice.
[Clutterbuck & Megginson, 1999]
Coaching is unlocking a person's potential to maximize their own performance. Relationship generally has a set duration. Generally more structured in nature and meetings are scheduled on a regular basis.
The agenda set by the coachee /client and focused on achieving specific, immediate goals. Evolves around specific development areas /issues.
It is helping them to learn rather than teaching them.
